Side Effects Of Drinking Too Much Apple Cider Vinegar

It is like the old saying, overdoing anything, or in this case, overconsuming anything, no matter the number of benefits it boasts, can be harmful to your health. Even the consumption of excess water that leads to overhydration is nothing less dangerous than being dehydrated. Working on the same principles, apple cider vinegar or AVC is another item people miscalculate consumption of.

The benefits of AVC are apparent to many. Therefore, it is no wonder why it finds wide usage in fitness hacks to celebrity diets, skin and hair products, and more. But, the same reasons also fool people into believing that one cannot include enough AVC into their diets, leading to overconsumption. However, drinking excess apple cider vinegar will not present you with any additional benefits but rather harm your health. The following article brings you some of the most common side effects of the AVC everyone must know about. So, let’s get started.

Tooth Decay

Apple cider vinegar is not the best choice for your oral health, considering how drinking vinegar can negatively affect tooth enamel. Once the damage to your tooth begins, this weakened enamel makes you susceptible to further problems, including cavities, tooth decay, and oral sensitivity. The effect of apple cider vinegar on teeth further intensifies for people who drink it directly without diluting, that too in a considerable amount at once. Diluting AVC and consulting an expert for consumption amounts is an excellent way to ensure good tooth health.

 Low Potassium Levels

It is no news that the human body uses potassium to maintain the proper functioning of the muscles and nerves. However, apple cider vinegar, particularly concentrated and in high amounts, can leach your bones of essential minerals, including potassium, causing a deficiency.

Low potassium levels, also referred to as Hypokalemia in medical terms, can further result in several health issues like weakness, constipation, abnormal heart rhythms, muscle cramps, and more. However, no such health conditions are in people who only consume a couple of tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in a day.

Nausea And Acidic Burning Feeling

Apple cider vinegar is nothing but acetic acid, after all. Therefore it is only natural to feel acidic burning in the gut after consumption of ACV on an empty stomach. Many people also believe that drinking apple cider vinegar can quickly and efficiently cure acid reflux without any major studies that suggest anything of the sort. On the contrary, ACV can impact acid reflux for worse when consumed in a concentrated form.  The same is true for those who drink ACV as a diet suppressant in an attempt to lose weight, as doing so can significantly intensify nausea for many instead.

Negative Impact On Blood Sugar Levels

The anti glycemic effect of apple cider vinegar on the blood sugar levels makes it a truly beneficial drink for those with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, considering how it helps lower glucose levels from the bloodstream.

However, unfortunately, it is not the case for those with uncontrolled blood sugar levels. ACV may then drop the blood sugar levels to the point of diabetic hypoglycemia, resulting in the brain being deprived of glucose, leading to loss of consciousness and seizures. For anyone suffering from blood sugar level issues, consulting a doctor before consuming apple cider vinegar in any amount whatsoever is the only right thing to do.

Skin Irritation

The many benefits of apple cider vinegar for good skin are among some main reasons for its massive popularity in the first place, but things are not so simple. Apart from lacking the beneficial nutrients in detectable amounts, as per reports by USDA, it is also particularly harmful to people with scaly or inflamed skin or a dry scalp. ACV is low in pH levels causing further irritation in the affected area, even leading to skin discoloration in some severe cases.

Treating and drinking apple cider vinegar as medicine that must be diluted and consumed with meals is the only right way to reap its benefits without any side effects. And, since chemical burn occurs on skin exposure to concentrated ACV, make sure to maintain safety while using it around the house for other purposes.
