Foods You Think Are Healthy But Aren’t

Many people believe that if a food is healthy and tastes good, it must be nutritious. However, this is not always the case. Many foods considered beneficial by many people have very little nutritional value. These foods may seem like they should be “healthy” because they don’t contain any added sugar or fat; however, these foods can still pack on pounds and may not provide much in terms of nutrition to your body. This article will look at some of these foods and explain why they are not as healthy as they seem!

Instant Oatmeal

Many people stick to their morning routine of a bowl full of oatmeal because they think it is a healthy choice. Unfortunately, instant oatmeal is often very high in sugar and has little nutritional value, leading to weight gain and health issues. For best results, you should try eating steel-cut oats instead, as this will provide you with more fiber and protein throughout the day.

Dried Fruit

Many fruits are high in fiber and antioxidants, making them healthy choices for anyone looking to maintain a balanced diet. Avoid dry fruit because it has been cooked at a very high temperature, removing all-natural water and increasing its sugar content. Therefore, it should be considered a “sometimes” food. Dried fruit also typically contains large amounts of preservatives, leading to weight gain and health issues if eaten in large quantities.

Wheat Bread

Most people look for bread that has been made from whole wheat or other whole grains because they believe this will provide them with more protein and fiber throughout the day. Unfortunately, many types of bread labeled as “wheat” do not have any 100% whole grain in them whatsoever! The first ingredient listed on the label of most wheat bread is enriched flour, which has been processed and has had many nutrients removed from it. White bread contains fewer calories and sugar than a lot of wheat bread and may be a better option.

Fruit Juice

Many people think that drinking fruit juice is a healthy choice because fruits are healthy. However, they don’t realize how much sugar is in each serving! The majority of fruit juices contain as much sugar as soda pop, if not more! One cup of orange juice contains just as much sugar as one cup of Coke! People should avoid drinking high sugar fruit juices to reduce their intake of added sugar and lose weight. Whole fruits are a better option as they contain natural sugars and have healthy fiber to keep you full until your next meal.

Microwaveable Popcorn

Many people love to sit down and enjoy a big bowl of popcorn when they get home from work. However, they need to know that microwavable popcorn can be very unhealthy! Microwaveable popcorn contains high amounts of trans fats. Trans fats correlate to a higher risk of heart disease and other health problems. If you enjoy eating some type of snack while watching TV, look for low-fat options such as air-popped popcorn instead.

Pita Bread

Unfortunately, pita bread can have more fat and calories than white bread! In reality, two slices of whole wheat pita bread contain 150 calories and 4 grams of fat, while two whole wheat sandwich bread only have 140 calories and 2 grams of fat!

Many people love eating hummus, but unfortunately, it is not the healthiest choice for dips. Although everyone knows that hummus tastes great with vegetables or crackers, they do not realize how much sodium this dip contains! One half-cup serving of regular hummus usually contains 490 milligrams of sodium; however, fat-free hummus can have as much as 940 milligrams! Eating large amounts of salt every day is never a good idea, and it will prevent you from losing weight.

Even though sushi seems like a healthy option for dinner, it is not the best choice. Sushi typically consists of white rice and fish, and some types of this dish even contain added sugar! White rice contains large amounts of starch that turns into sugar in the body and can spike blood sugar levels. People should avoid overeating sushi because it will cause their bodies to hold onto fat more than usual.

Protein Bars

Protein is essential for the body to function correctly. Protein bars are a favorite snack among many people who work out regularly, but they may contain large amounts of added sugar! Some protein bars can have as much as 20 grams of sugar in each bar! However, it is not wise to eat many snacks with added sugars. Instead of eating protein bars when you need a quick bite to eat, try eating an apple or banana with some peanut butter if you want something with filling protein.

Consumers are obsessed with health and wellness. They constantly read about new diets that promise increased energy and better health. Unfortunately, there are still plenty of unhealthy foods on supermarket shelves. By knowing which foods to avoid, people can feel better about their food and overall health!
